For a long time I hesitated to make my own hardwood floor cleaner because vinegar is controversial. I finally decided to try a DIY version for two reasons: commercial products like Bona are expensive, and I confirmed the finish on my floors would tolerate a mild acidic cleaner.
How you should clean hardwood floors depends more on the finish than on the wood species. If you’re unsure about your floor finish, check with your contractor or the manufacturer before using a new product or method. Most modern hardwoods are coated with polyurethane, which generally tolerates diluted vinegar. However, some factory-applied and water-based finishes can be more sensitive to acids and bases, so it’s worth confirming compatibility.
Why is vinegar controversial?
Vinegar is acidic and can break down grime while leaving a streak-free appearance, but strong concentrations can damage some finishes. Never pour straight vinegar onto floors or allow any cleaning solution to pool. I dilute vinegar to reduce its acidity—my mix uses 1/2 cup of vinegar per gallon of water. Always test any homemade cleaner on a hidden area first. If you prefer a ready-made option, stick with a commercial wood-floor cleaner.

How to clean hardwood floors
Old-school bucket and rag
I typically clean with a rag and a bucket because my kids leave spills that need a little elbow grease. This method lets you target sticky spots without saturating the floor.
Refillable spray mop
Refillable spray mops are convenient. If you have one, you can refill its reservoir with a homemade solution instead of buying branded refills. For spray mops I recommend a gentler dilution: about 1 tablespoon of vinegar per 16 ounces (about 1 pint) of water to avoid over-acidifying the solution.
Microfiber mop
Microfiber mops work well for damp mopping. Either soak a damp mop pad in the cleaning solution, wring it thoroughly, and attach it to the mop, or lightly mist the floor with a spray bottle and wipe with the microfiber pad. This avoids excessive moisture while still cleaning effectively.

DIY Hardwood Floor Cleaner
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1 black tea bag
- 1 gallon warm water
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 cup vinegar
- For refillable mops use 1 tablespoon vinegar for every 16 ounces of liquid.
Instructions
-
Bring 1 cup of water to a boil, steep the black tea bag, and let it cool to room temperature.
-
Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of warm water.
-
Add the brewed black tea, olive oil and vinegar to the bucket and stir gently.
-
Use the solution with a mop to clean floors, avoiding over-wetting.
-
If the floor feels slippery after cleaning, go over it with a dry mop or towel to remove excess moisture and residue.
-
Do not use this on waxed or untreated hardwood; those surfaces are best cleaned gently with a slightly damp cloth only.
