Home Office Wallpaper Reveal: Stylish Design Ideas and Tips

Updated: March 2, 2023

I spent the last year and a half redesigning our dining-room-turned-office while working in the same room the entire time. Last week we finally finished installing the home office wallpaper and it truly pulled the room together. Below I share the details of the reveal and some home office furniture ideas. Read the full original post from Chrissy Marie for more photos and context.

Our Home Office Wallpaper + The Room Reveal!

If you’re new here: this room used to be our dining room. The dark grasscloth walls were beautiful, but once my husband and I both started working from home we needed to reconfigure the space. Sharing the kitchen nook and spreading work across the dining table led to clutter and poor organization — not ideal when running two small businesses.

A room redesign was absolutely necessary.

The Home Office Wallpaper: Serena & Lily Feather Paper

After debating several options, Serena & Lily kindly partnered on this project, and I chose their Feather wallpaper. I’ve admired this pattern for years. It feels classic, fresh, and brings texture and interest while keeping the room light and airy.

I had already purchased other Serena & Lily items prior to their outreach—my fondness for their pieces is genuine. Their wallpaper selection offers timeless options that work well with many styles.

Home Office Wallpaper Ideas and Favorites:

The Feather paper in bone was the right balance for our space: neutral enough to pair with other patterns and colors, but interesting enough to serve as the room’s focal point. It feels organic and provides the “wow” factor without overwhelming the room.

The Wallpaper Installation

I hired a professional to install the wallpaper because I didn’t have the patience to do it carefully myself. If you plan to hang wallpaper on your own, success often depends on the specific product—some are more forgiving than others. My installer finished the Serena & Lily Feather paper before lunchtime and said it was easy to work with, which is reassuring if you’re considering DIY.

Home Office Furniture Ideas

Below are the key pieces and ideas that shaped this office. All sources for items mentioned were provided in the original post.

The Partners Desk

We selected a partners desk to float in the middle of the room so both sides would look finished. The desk we bought is no longer sold, but there are similar options available. If you plan to share a central desk, choose one that’s attractive from both sides and has a smooth top for writing—mine had a slightly uneven surface that I found annoying.

Although our schedules rarely put us at the desk together, we wanted a large workspace with enough room to keep both of us organized.

I also admired a partner’s desk from Serena & Lily with white, cane, and brass details, and considered an extra-long desk from Pottery Barn as another option.

The Tailored Desk Chair

A desk chair must be both beautiful and comfortable. I chose the Ross armchair with a removable slipcover in high-performance fabric for durability and long-term comfort. After owning the chair for over a year, I updated the slipcover to a surf stripe in coastal blue to introduce a playful mix of prints alongside the wallpaper and rug.

Our Office Built-Ins

The built-in cabinets include heavy, substantial unlaquered brass hardware that feels high-end. The cabinets hide our printer, scanner, and other equipment, keeping the room tidy. The original post details how the built-ins were constructed.

Home Office Seating

We created a small seating nook using a Shore Bench moved from the bedroom. Reusing a favorite piece and updating its cushion from dark velvet to a linen pinstripe made it more appropriate for the bright office. The bench provides a spot for quick conversations when the kids stop by while I’m working.

A Home Office Rug: Hillsborough Rug

I chose the Hillsborough rug in a performance weave that mimics a hand-knotted look with a slightly distressed motif—enough to feel collected without looking artificial. It’s made from durable performance yarns and has held up well so far. I used rug tape along the edges to keep it in place rather than a pad.

The Hillsborough sits across from a Jute Border rug in the foyer so the two rugs complement each other in open sightlines. Both rugs are good quality and haven’t shed.

Home Office Pendant Lighting

We reused two pendant lights from other areas of the house. Their white wood finish has a slightly rustic, coastal feel and shows fine hairline cracks that add character. The light quality is excellent for the workspace.
