Apple Crisp Recipe: No Pie Crust Required

Many people hesitate to make pie, but when it comes to classic American desserts for summer gatherings, apple desserts are hard to beat. If you want all the comforting flavor of apple pie without fussing over a crust, apple crisp is the perfect solution. An apple crisp is a baked fruit dessert topped with a sweet, crumbly streusel-like topping. It offers the warm, spiced apple filling you love from pie while being simpler to assemble and more forgiving to prepare.

Apple crisp ready to go in the oven

This apple crisp recipe is one of those go-to desserts that comes together quickly with pantry staples. It’s ideal for entertaining because it can be prepped ahead and baked when you’re ready to serve. The combination of tart and sweet apples provides the best texture—some apples will soften during baking, while others will hold their shape, giving you a nicely balanced filling. The topping becomes golden and crunchy, complementing the tender, spiced apples beneath.

Jane’s Tips and Hints:

For best results, prep the filling and topping separately and refrigerate until you’re ready to bake. That way, when dinner is finished you can quickly assemble and bake the crisp while guests relax. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for a classic finish. Children enjoy helping to mix the topping, and the dessert is forgiving enough that small hands can participate in sprinkling it over the apples.

This recipe is suitable for picnics, potlucks, or a relaxed family dessert. It travels well and tastes excellent at room temperature as well as warm from the oven. Because it doesn’t rely on a delicate crust, it’s a sturdy choice to take to summer gatherings or to prepare a day ahead.

Variations and serving suggestions: For a deeper caramel flavor, sprinkle a little additional brown sugar over the apples before adding the topping. Replace pecans with chopped walnuts or almonds to suit your preference. For a gluten-free version, substitute the flour with a gluten-free flour blend and use certified gluten-free oats. This apple crisp also pairs well with a sharp cheddar slice on the side for a traditional American twist.

Storing and reheating: Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for 3–4 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave for 30–60 seconds or warm in a 325°F (160°C) oven until heated through. If you plan to freeze, bake the crisp fully, cool completely, then wrap tightly and freeze for up to 2 months. Rewarm from frozen, covered, at 350°F (175°C) until heated through.
