Notes on Ingredients
The recipe card below lists exact quantities. Here are quick tips to help you choose the best ingredients.

- Ground Turkey: You can substitute ground chicken or ground beef if preferred.
- Zucchini: Use smaller, firmer zucchini for the best texture and flavor; large ones can be watery and seedy.
- Bell Peppers: Red, yellow, or orange peppers bring sweetness and color; they work better here than green peppers.
- Jalapeño Pepper: Optional. Adds gentle heat when included. Seed it to reduce the heat.
- Aromatics: Yellow onion and garlic add a savory base—don’t skip them.
- Taco Seasoning: Store-bought or a homemade blend both work well.
- Salsa: Using salsa instead of plain tomatoes builds deep flavor quickly; choose mild, medium, or hot depending on your spice preference.
- Cheese: Freshly grated cheese melts more smoothly than pre-shredded; cheddar, Colby, or Monterey Jack are excellent choices.
- Lime: A squeeze of fresh lime at the end brightens and balances the dish.
How to Make Turkey Taco Skillet
Below are helpful tips; full ingredient amounts and step-by-step instructions are in the recipe card.
- Brown the turkey. Heat a bit of oil in a large skillet and sauté the ground turkey until it’s no longer pink, breaking it into small pieces as it cooks.
- Add the vegetables. Stir in diced onion, bell pepper, zucchini, and optional jalapeño. Sauté until the vegetables begin to soften, then add minced garlic and cook 30–60 seconds to lightly toast.
- Season. Add salsa and taco seasoning, stir to combine, then simmer until the vegetables are tender and flavors meld.
- Finish with lime and cheese. Remove from heat, stir in fresh lime juice, and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Cover or let sit a few minutes to allow the cheese to melt.

Serving Suggestions
This turkey taco skillet works well as a complete one-pan meal or as a filling for other dishes:
- Make tacos or burritos: Spoon the mixture into corn or flour tortillas and add your favorite toppings.
- Add toppings: Serve with lettuce, tomatoes, sliced avocado, cilantro, guacamole, or sour cream for extra flavor and texture.
- Serve over rice: Stretch the meal by serving it over rice or cauliflower rice to keep it lower in carbs.
Recipe Modifications
- Dairy-free: Omit cheese and add a scoop of guacamole for a creamy finish.
- Lower-sodium: Use low-sodium salsa or reduce added salt in taco seasoning.
- Add corn: If not limiting carbs, add 1 cup of corn with the salsa for sweetness and texture.
- Adjust the spice: Keep seeds in the jalapeño or choose hot salsa for more heat; omit jalapeño and use mild salsa for a milder version.

Taco seasoning: To make a homemade blend, combine 1 tablespoon chili powder, 1 teaspoon cumin, ¾ teaspoon salt, ¾ teaspoon paprika, ½ teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ¼ teaspoon dried oregano, and ⅛ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes.
Jalapeño: Omit for milder flavor or keep the seeds for more heat.
Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave or in a dry skillet. This dish does not freeze well.
Salsa: Smooth or chunky, mild to hot — choose based on your preferred spice level, as it affects the final heat of the dish.
