I’m generally up for almost any food—if others are trading toppings or leaving things off their plates, I’m the one saying “bring me everything!” It’s both a blessing and a curse because I truly enjoy almost everything.

Root beer floats are one of the few treats I don’t love in their classic form. I like root beer and vanilla ice cream separately, and the combination in theory is great. But the frothy, creamy carbonation of a traditional float doesn’t always appeal to me.

That’s why I was surprised when the idea for a root beer float smoothie came to me. Removing the carbonation keeps the flavor combo I enjoy while creating a smooth, creamy drink without the fizzy texture. The result is a satisfying, lighter version of the classic.

This recipe makes a generous portion. Even so, using nonfat Greek yogurt keeps the smoothie under 150 calories per serving, making it a smart skinny swap when you want something that tastes indulgent but isn’t heavy.

The root beer extract in the smoothie adds the characteristic flavor without overwhelming the drink. If you prefer a stronger root beer punch, add extract cautiously—its flavor can intensify quickly.

These smoothies are perfect for warm-weather movie nights or any time you want a nostalgic treat without the extra calories.

Got a craving for a root beer float but need something a little slimmer? This Root Beer Float Smoothie hits the spot at just a fraction of the calories of the real deal!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 3 cups ice
  • 1 underripe frozen banana sliced
  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons root beer extract
  • agave to taste

Instructions

  • Combine the milk, ice, banana, yogurt, vanilla, and root beer extract in a blender. Blend until smooth. Taste and sweeten with agave if desired.

Recipe Notes:

If you prefer a stronger root beer flavor, add extract in small increments — it’s potent.

An underripe frozen banana adds creaminess without a pronounced banana taste. The riper the banana, the sweeter and more banana-forward the smoothie will be, so adjust the agave accordingly.

Nonfat or full-fat Greek yogurt can be used depending on your preference for richness and calories.
