Pick a Powerful Focus Word for the New Year (2026)

Hello!

The new year is nearly here and conversations about resolutions, fresh starts, and challenges are all around. Are you feeling that excitement too? Maybe you’re planning a few goals, or perhaps the idea of resolutions doesn’t appeal to you at all.

Personally, I don’t always connect with traditional resolutions. I tend to begin things when they become important to me rather than waiting for a symbolic date. You might be the same, or you might prefer clear objectives and milestones.

how to choose a focus word for the year

Whether you set goals or not, here’s a simple idea I’ve been enjoying: choose a focus word for the year.

Focus Word for the Year

A focus word is a single word or short phrase that represents what you want the year to be about. It becomes a touchstone for decisions — when you’re unsure which path to take, you can ask whether this choice supports your focus word. Over time, the word should capture the feeling and direction of your year.

I asked some friends and family what word popped into their heads when I mentioned the idea. I encouraged them to pick the first word that felt true to their hearts. “Happier” came up more than once, along with several other meaningful choices. It’s interesting how varied and revealing people’s words can be.

My focus word for 2017 is less.

At first, “less” felt almost counterintuitive because I’m naturally drawn to doing and having more. But the image and feeling of the word kept returning, and I realized what it meant for me.

For me, less means less rushing from thing to thing, less clutter and fewer possessions, and more willingness to say no to commitments that don’t serve what matters most. By creating more space, I can focus on what truly matters: deeper connection with the people I love and the priorities that matter most.

I’m excited to see how this focus word will shape my choices and routines over the coming year.

Do you have a word or phrase that stands out as you head into the new year? Please share it — I’d love to hear what guides you.

Cheers and happy new year!
