Spiced Cinnamon Hot Chocolate Recipe for Cozy Evenings

Now that winter has arrived, few things beat coming in from a chilly, windy day and wrapping my hands around a steaming mug of hot chocolate. While plain hot chocolate is always satisfying (yes, even the quick mixes), this cinnamon hot chocolate is my go-to. It’s cozy, chocolaty, and just different enough to feel special — so I’m sharing the recipe with you.

This version grew out of a recipe I found in an old church cookbook from the 1970s. That original used instant milk and cinnamon sticks. I don’t keep instant milk on hand, and one shopping trip I forgot the cinnamon sticks — and I won’t go back out just for a few sticks. So I use ground cinnamon from the cupboard and call it good. If you have cinnamon sticks and fresh cinnamon to sprinkle on top, by all means use them — they make a pretty garnish.

For finishing touches, I sometimes shave a bit of chocolate from a bar to sprinkle on top. It’s optional but highly recommended. I also admit to using canned whipped cream when we’re in a hurry — practical when a chocolate-hungry kid is waiting — but freshly whipped cream elevates the drink if you have the time.

This cinnamon hot chocolate pairs nicely with sweet rolls or holiday pastries when you want a comforting treat. Below are the details and the recipe so you can make a batch at home.
