Back-to-School Cake and Cupcake Ideas for Classroom Celebrations

Today I’m sharing an absolutely adorable back-to-school cake and matching cupcakes—so fun to make and perfect for celebrating the start of a new school year.

CUTE Back to School Cake & Cupcake Tutorial

For many families, the new school year is just around the corner. Time for new crayons, fresh notebooks, meeting teachers, and resetting the alarm clock. This season always brings a mix of excitement and nerves—so why not celebrate with a festive cake or some fun cupcakes?

If your kids aren’t thrilled about going back, a themed treat can brighten their day. Or, if you want to make a great first impression at school, bring in a back-to-school cake or a platter of cupcakes and you’ll instantly become a favorite. Below is a simple, step-by-step guide to create a playful school bus sheet cake and two easy cupcake designs.

How to Make a School Bus Sheet Cake

Start with a 9×13 single-layer sheet cake. To make carving easier, use a paper template for the bus shape. You don’t need perfection—just something to guide your knife so you don’t have to eyeball every cut. Cut away the excess cake, making sure to leave space for the wheels so they sit at the right height.

For wheels I used Mini Moon Pies, which fit perfectly; if you can’t find those, chocolate doughnuts or large chocolate cookies work equally well. Place them where the wheels belong and adjust as needed before you frost.

Frost the cake with a crusting vanilla buttercream tinted a bright school-bus yellow (Americolor Egg Yolk Yellow works nicely). You can mix a touch of orange with yellow for a warmer tone. Let the buttercream crust, then smooth it with a paper towel for a neat finish.

To add details like windows and doors, either freehand or use simple cardstock templates to make impressions in the crusted buttercream so you can trace them later. If you prefer, cut window shapes from fondant and place them on the cake.

Impressions for windows

Outline the windows and doors with a small round piping tip (tips 3 or 4 are great), then fill them in with a larger round tip (a tip 12 works well). After the piped areas have crusted, smooth them with a spatula and a paper towel for a clean look. Add a thin line below the windows to represent the trim—measure about 2½” from the top of the cake for consistency.

Piped bus details

For faces of children in the bus windows, roll small circles of fondant and draw facial features with an edible food-color pen, or pipe tiny features using tips 3 or 4. Use a larger tip (tip 12) to pipe the wheel arches and a tip 16 star for a small border along the bottom of the cake. Add accents like headlights, grille, and bumper with small details piped in contrasting colors.

The result is a cheerful school bus cake that’s playful and inviting. Keep decorations simple and colorful so the theme reads clearly, and don’t worry about perfection—charm comes from the handmade details.

Back to School Cupcakes

Cupcakes are a perfect complement to the bus cake, or you can make a whole platter of themed cupcakes instead of a single large cake. I made two easy designs that are quick and kid-friendly.

Design 1: Blackboard toppers. Use small pieces of dark chocolate (mini dark chocolate bars are ideal) as chalkboards and pipe messages on them with white buttercream using a tiny round tip (Wilton tip 2). Add a piped brown border along the base of the chocolate using a slightly larger tip (Wilton tip 4).

Design 2: Apple toppers. Pipe mounds of red buttercream with a medium round tip (like a Wilton tip 12) to create a rounded apple shape. Add a small stem and leaf in brown and green using a thin tip (Wilton tip 4).

Arrange the cupcakes around the cake for a delightful display, or serve them on their own for classroom treats. They’re easy to transport and always popular with kids and teachers alike.

That’s all there is to it—simple techniques and a few playful details transform a sheet cake and standard cupcakes into a festive back-to-school celebration. If you try these designs, enjoy the process and have fun customizing faces, messages, and colors to match your kids’ personalities.
