A guide of what to watch during quarantine, quarantine projects to help keep you busy, virtual art experiences, free online courses, and more!

With family in countries under lockdown and relatives self-isolating, Charles and I have been extra careful. I’m currently 25 weeks pregnant after a long IVF journey, so we’ve limited our outings. We haven’t left home since last Friday, aside from two necessary doctor visits for glucose testing.

Just 11 days ago we were celebrating Charles’s 40th birthday — the shift has been dramatic. Chicago, a city known for its vibrant restaurant scene, has had dining rooms close (many restaurants are still offering takeout and delivery). The streets feel quiet and nearly everyone we know is working from home.

It’s hard not to want to do more to help. The best thing each of us can do right now is practice social distancing and take it seriously. Beyond staying home, we hired a part-time worker who needed income during this time, and we plan to support local restaurants by ordering delivery. If you can, please consider doing the same to help small businesses through this difficult period.

What I can offer is a collection of practical ideas to make time at home more enjoyable and productive. I’ve compiled lists of TV shows and movies across streaming platforms, plus a range of projects and activities to try while staying in. Charles and I are focused on doing what’s safest for our baby, and that means staying home and making the most of this time together.

What to Do during Quarantine:

Quarantine activities
Home projects
Creative hobbies
Virtual experiences
Online courses

Try a balance of practical projects and restorative activities. Ideas include:

  • Home organization: tackle one closet or drawer at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  • Cooking and baking: experiment with new recipes or refine family favorites.
  • Learning: explore free online courses to pick up a new skill or deepen an interest.
  • Creative pursuits: draw, paint, write, or try a DIY craft project to keep your hands busy.
  • Virtual culture: visit online museum collections, attend virtual performances, or join livestreamed talks.
  • Wellness routines: gentle daily exercise, guided meditation, and prioritized sleep help maintain balance.
  • Connection: schedule video calls with friends and family to maintain social ties while physically apart.

Break larger goals into manageable daily tasks and celebrate small wins. Rotate activities throughout the week so each day has variety and purpose without feeling like a marathon.

I also want to express my gratitude to grocery stores offering special hours for the elderly and immunocompromised. As a pregnant person considered more vulnerable, having access to quieter shopping times and fresh produce has been a tremendous relief.
