20 Fun Dr. Seuss Crafts and Activities for Kids

One of my favorite childhood celebrations is coming up—Dr. Seuss Day! Every year on March 2nd we honor Dr. Seuss for his lasting contributions to children’s literature. Whether you imagined chaos with The Cat in the Hat or wanted to protect the Truffula Trees from The Lorax, Dr. Seuss wrote many of the stories that shaped early reading memories. This year would have marked his 112th birthday, and his imaginative work continues to inspire readers and makers of all ages.

The 20 Dr. Seuss–inspired activities and crafts listed below are perfect for celebrating Dr. Seuss Day, and they also make fun, educational projects throughout the year. Choose an activity that pairs with your child’s favorite book or try something new to explore different stories together. These crafts encourage creativity, fine motor skills, and lots of playful learning—plus you can always add a little rhyme while you work!

These projects cover a variety of ages and skill levels. Simple crafts like paper plate Cat in the Hat hats, salt dough handprints, and Thing 1/Thing 2 pencils are great for preschoolers. More involved activities—like creating Truffula trees, scented oobleck, or writing and crafting from Oh, the Places You’ll Go!—work well with older kids who enjoy mixing creative writing with hands-on making. Sensory activities such as oobleck tie science and art together, while matching games and printables reinforce early literacy and letter recognition.

To get the most out of these ideas, pick a book to read first, then choose one or two activities that relate to the story. For example, read The Lorax and then create Truffula trees or Lorax mustaches; pair One Fish Two Fish with the goldfish printables or a simple counting game; or read The Cat in the Hat and follow up with a Cat in the Hat paper plate craft. These paired approaches make the story come alive and extend learning beyond the page.

Whether you celebrate on March 2nd or enjoy these ideas year-round, Dr. Seuss–inspired crafts and activities are a fun way to encourage creativity, language development, and a lifelong love of reading. Gather supplies, choose a story, and make some memorable, rhyming moments together.
